How we appear is the first (and sometimes lasting) impression that a judge or jury will have of you.

Court Rules and Attire Guidelines

  • The best court attire is clean and professional.

  • When appearing via Zoom, don't smoke or eat while your case is being discussed.

  • Wear a full shirt and pants or skirt (or dress). Halter tops, tank tops, and shorts are not permitted.

  • No hats. Unless your head wear is based on a religious belief, it must be removed.

  • Don't wear clothes that are dirty, full of holes, or otherwise make you appear unkempt.

  • Don't wear pajamas or anything that looks like pajamas (seriously).

  • Don't wear clothes with words or symbols that are offensive or controversial. While judicial officials strive to maintain their impartiality, they are still human. Help yourself by not wearing clothing that could offend a judge or jury.

  • Wear shoes (when appearing in-person).

It is also important that you act appropriately. This includes remaining calm even when your temper, sadness, or nervousness threaten to take control. This also includes turning off your cellphone and showing up on time for your hearing.

If you have any questions or concerns about your attire, please contact me to discuss.
